BARBIE IN BIRMINGHAM AT 60
The Birmingham Museum of Art hosts an immersive Barbie exhibition.
Birmingham, Ala. ----- On the occasion of her 60th birthday, Barbie is the subject of a new exhibition at the Birmingham Museum of Art. The exhibition is free of charge and runs through January 26, 2020.
Barbie: Dreaming of a Female Future looks over the past six decades at Barbie’s many careers and enduring independence and how that has influenced the imaginations of youngsters around the world. At the same time, it has been widely noted that her impossibly perfect physique promoted unattainable body ideals. The exhibition directs attention to both ambition and perceptions of beauty
The exhibition is housed in a life-size dream house, much like Barbie’s very own modern abode. The works within represent artists’ interpretations of Barbie and are presented as part of the dream house. Sheila Pree Bright’s photography examines the limited standards of beauty that Barbie represents. Lauran Kelley’s video explores racial identity using humor, the absurd, and the ordinary.
The dream house itself is created by female artists and interior designers and is furnished by women artists and makers.
The Birmingham Museum of Art is one of the finest regional museums in the United States. Museum hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am until 5 pm, and Sunday, noon – 5 pm. The museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays. For more information, visit www.artsbma.org.
