Jacob Lawrence | The American Struggle
Birmingham Musuem of Art
Co-presented by Alabama Power, Vulcan Materials, and The Warner Foundation - November 20, 2020 - February 07, 2021
Arriving in Birmingham from its most recent presentation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this exhibition features the work of African-American artist, Jacob Lawrence, the iconic modernist who was arguably the greatest narrative painter of the 20th century. Through his Struggle series, Lawrence highlights the contributions of women and people of color in the early history of the United States.
The exhibition recently enjoyed international acclaim when one of its missing works was discovered by a museum visitor as belonging to her neighbor. Please see articles by The New York Times and ArtNews for details on this incredible story.
